The Greek mainland and many of the Greek Islands are a particularly popular holiday destination and as a result this has seen many a visitor fall in love with the area.
This has increased the demand for holiday homes, as everybody wants their own little piece of such a lovely part of Europe. What could be better than a little home from home with beautiful scenery and Mediterranean climate and a friendly welcome from the locals.
The Islands are particularly desirable; the likes of the popular destinations such as Corfu, Crete, Zakynthos and Rhodes see visitors return year after year. But as there are so many Greek Islands new places are always being discovered. For example with the ‘Mamma Mia’ film proving so popular, this is likely to increase the demand for the relatively unknown Islands, Skopelos or Skiathos, due to those islands providing such a pretty backdrop to the Elm. Much the same happened to the island Kefalonia after the film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin was released in 2001.
As with the insurance for some other countries we cover, earthquake cover will be required by some but not others. We are happy to offer earthquake cover for our clients for an extra premium. History has shown that the area is at particular risk to such events. An example is the Ionion Earthquake in 1953, which particularly struck Kefalonia and Zakynthos on August 12th. The earthquake measured over 7 on the Richter scale and caused such destruction that Zakynthos Town, the capital of the island, was particularly devastated along with Argosoli the capital of Kefalonia.
In 2003 Zakynthos had more tremors, as well as in 2005 and 2006.
In the Aegean Sea the Island of Rhodes has experienced severe earthquakes. One of the Seven Wonders of the World The Colossus Of Rhodes was destoryed by an earthqukae in 226BC. In 2008, Rhodes was hit by an earthquake measuring over 6 on the Richter Scale.
For many the desire to buy a holiday home in Greece proves hard to resist. Whether you have the holiday home purely for your own use which may mean leaving the property for long periods between visits or let for holiday use to cover some of the outgoings, it can be insured, and our clients take advantage of our flexible policy that covers both options.
Our clients are able to enjoy their holiday homes safe in the knowledge that we are able to offer them cover without the requirement of having to stay at the property within a specified certain timescale. Providing the property can, on your behalf, be checked internally at least once every thirty days you would be compliant with our main demand during the unoccupied periods. This requirement makes every sense not only from an insurer’s point of view but very importantly as far as the owner is concerned.
Those owning a holiday home in Greece can also let their property for holiday use safe in the knowledge they have Public Liability Cover included within their policy.
This will protect them should guests or tenants staying at the property have an unfortunate accident or injury and seek recompense from the holiday home owner.
For anyone wishing to insure a property in Greece, whether on the mainland or an lsland, we are happy to assist you in any way we can. Not every insurer will offer earthquake cover for properties in Greece, but we can provide earthquake cover at an extra cost and you can have the peace of mind that it is covered for your holiday home. |
